About the Program
About VACSWIM
VACSWIM is one of South Australia's most recognised water safety programs, supported by the South Australian Government and delivered exclusively by Surf Life Saving SA.
Since the 1950s, VACSWIM has helped generations of South Australian children develop the skills, confidence and knowledge they need to stay safe in and around the water. Today, thousands of children participate in the program each year at locations across metropolitan and regional South Australia.
Designed for children aged 3 to 12 years, VACSWIM provides fun, engaging lessons during the December and January school holidays. Participants learn essential water safety skills, build confidence in aquatic environments and develop swimming and personal survival skills that support a lifetime of safe recreation.
What Children Learn
VACSWIM helps children develop:
Water safety awareness
Swimming and survival skills
Confidence in aquatic environments
Basic emergency and rescue awareness
Through practical, age appropriate activities, participants learn how to enjoy the water safely and confidently.
Programs for Teenagers
Learning doesn't stop at age 12. Participants aged 13 to 15 years can continue their development through extension programs at select locations, including Water Rescues, Community Pool Rescue and Surf Rescue. These programs strengthen water safety knowledge while introducing practical rescue skills and leadership opportunities.
Why Choose VACSWIM?
VACSWIM combines water safety education with fun, active learning experiences. Participants build swimming ability, develop personal survival skills and gain the confidence to make safer decisions in and around the water. The program also supports participants with additional needs to enjoy the recreational and therapeutic benefits of aquatic activities.
