KICK-START YOUR CAREER BY PARTICIPATING IN ONE OF
SA'S LARGEST COMMUNITY EVENTS!
The annual VACSWIM initiative is a South Australian
Government funded water safety program. Each year it engages up to
12,000 primary school aged children at more than 120 sites across
the state. VACSWIM's aim is to reduce the incidence of drowning and
water related accidents amongst the younger generations.
2020/21 VACSWIM will be delivered by three main water safety
bodies. The Royal Life Saving Society will manage and deliver the
majority of pool-based programs. Surf Life Saving SA will manage
and deliver all programs at the beach or open water. YMCA of SA
will manage and deliver all programs at YMCA of SA pools.
2020/21 VACSWIM providers will start appointing
eligible instructors in September 2020, continuing this
process until all positions/sites have been filled and all staff
who worked in the 2019 program are encouraged to re-apply by
contacting the program providers specific to their site.
Each provider of VACSWIM must also comply with the AUSTSWIM
Swimming and Water Safety Program Guidelines, unless they have been
granted an exemption. It has been determined that in
accordance with AUSTSWIM guidelines all teachers engaged for
instruction for VACSWIM must hold a current AUSTSWIM Teacher of
Swimming and Water Safety Certificate.
AUSTSWIM is Australia's national organisation for the teaching
of swimming and water safety. The AUSTSWIM accreditation licence is
the industry standard for swimming and water safety teachers and is
delivered and recognised in each state and territory of Australia
and many countries overseas.
Candidates may enrol as young as 16 years of age, with licence
being issued at 17 years of age. Secondary school students gain ten
Stage 2 SACE points on completion of the qualification. The
AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety accredited training
also appears on the recognised VET training list
Holding an AUSTSWIM Teacher Licence will not just allow you to
work for VACSWIM, it is also the standard required to work for
DECD, as well most other swim schools and water safety programs in
South Australia and nationally.
Having your AUSTSWIM accreditation and insurance will also allow
you to work independently if you wish.
